try rope lights instead?...

From what I have seen it is pretty expensive, doesn't throw very much light, and the source bulb gets very hot. I used the rope light at outwater.com and I am EXTREMELY happy with it. This is the cheapest source, only $1 U.S. per foot!!! They also make a pre-made "spider" that has 8 sockets pre-wired at 1' apart that can be used for stairs or under bookshelves (not shown on website must ask for it). This stuff is 110 V and just plugs into an outlet, can be used outside or in and up to 150' on one circuit. I'm not affiliated with them, I just love the stuff and I love being able to buy from the manufacturer and get the best price ANYWHERE. They also have all kinds of other lights, also maybe try rockler.com
