try butane (no kidding)...

Shelly, try butane on your leftover adhesive. You can get it at drug stores, usually near cigarette lighters. I learned this trick from a Hallmark store who removed sticker adhesvie from an expensive porcelain piece I bought (I cringed as I watched the clerk use it, but it worked). I have since used it on everything from porcelain to pewter to glass with no damage. It even took very old, yellowed scotch tape residue off an antique piece of sterling silver, no problem. Just dab a tiny bit on a paper towel or rag and gently rub. Please try out on a very inconspicuous area first, as I've never tried it on vinyl!
