touchy subject, but...

I for one like and do in my business allot of painting of brick on fireplaces to re juivinate them.

Clean them with a vinegar and water solution to cut all grease and debris buildup.

Apply several coats of good quality primer. Pay attention to sealing grout or mortar areas.

Then apply several coats (3 or 4) of your finish coat. I like a gloss or shiner on fireplaces, its easier to clean.

Its faster to use a sprayer, but if too much around and concerned about over spray, use a brush.
