In reply to Attaching a Deck to a House on Slab by Tim Patton on October 6th, 2000 07:38 AM [Go to top of thread]

Hi Tim.
You say the house is built on a slab ( raft) so I would
think it would be better to keep them apart, because the
new slab( foundation for the deck ) could move, so
keep the deck free standing, if the deck slab moves then it wont
do any damage to the main slab ( house).
There is always movement in this area when new, maybe only one or
two ins, but it may/will move, ( alittle).
but if you wish, you can fix the deck slab to the house base by drilling and
fitting re-bars every 18" to 20" along the side of the slab ( house)where the
deck will be, you can then shutter in a new base around the re-bars, this will tie
the one to the other,
I myself would keep them free standing,( the ground where I live is a little sandy
but I dont know the ground around your house.
any way. good luck with your project.....John 2000
