You say you are purchasing the home, so I'm assuming that you have only been in the home for walk throughs and inspections. When oak floors are not walked on for a period of time, they "relax" and will make this crackling sound when you first walk on them. This "relaxing" is caused by changes in temperature, humidity, etc. If the home you are looking at has the thermostat turned down, and you are the first one to walk on the floors in the morning, the floors will crackel. After you walk over them a couple of times, the crackling should stop. Adding a humidifier in the winter will help.
If the floors do this all the time, even after walking over them several times, post back. There may be other solutions.
