the stuff might crumble and not cut nicely as you would want it, then recessed means up in the ceiling, so what is up there to allow for this to be recessed, and can lights have to have special insulation around them. They have to be treated specially as they can be a fire hazard.

I would lean toward believing him and consider maybe track lights or some alternative light source.
