tips on how not to disturb the footing while digging out a crawl space

Posted by richard on March 9th, 2003 08:11 PM

i have a crawl space in my basement which is about 5' high and the area is covers is 29.6" wide and 14.8" long. The crawl space is mostly dirt but it has a coating of cement on top about 4" thick. Now when i dig it out im planning on making it a 1' deeper then the origanal footing. I was woundering if you had any suggestions on what should be done to so that while i dig it out the foundation will be supported. Also the crawl space has a knee wall supporting the chimney above it. Is there anything i could do to support the chimney while and after im digging? Im definetly going to higher an architect to come and tell what i should do but i just wanted to get a second oppione from anyone on their experience what what other options i have. anything is appreciated thank you
