Timbers for landscaping

To Jay,
The timbers would be used mostly for 4 foot wide steps from one terrace off the garage area to the lower terrace off the walk out basement. There would be about 7 steps there. The second terrace that is lower would have again about 7 steps. The retaining walls would not be timber, but either field stone or those interlocking cement blocks.
The question is due we use the cement blocks, too, for steps which would be alot more costly than the timbers. I personally like the look and feel of the wood, but don't want them to rot out in ten years. Thanks for asking me to clarify.
