Tiling over Quarry/Ceramic Tile

We recently purchased a 50 year old house, and the kitchen and 2nd (small) bathroom have a dark red quarry/ceramic tile for the floor. The tiles are in pretty good shape, we just don't care for them and were wondering if we could tile over them if we leveled out where the grout is. Do we need to put something on the floor first so the new tiles will grip? Thanks for any help!
