Get a old useless wood chisel.

Knock a hole in a bad tile square and chisel outward from the center to the ends. once you get one out then you just carefully chisel out the bad ones.

Just a small tap usually gets the tile off. Use your chisel wisely and it is really no big deal. you also need to remove all the old mastic from the walls so that you have a good set for the new tiles.
