The best method is to lay directly on to the existing tile with nothing in between, this can be done if the existing tile is in good shape and has no major cracks, all that needs to be done is scarify (roughen) the surface and acrylic used with your mortar. Removing the existing tile is the other alternative and will be very tough, most beds are 1 1/2" thick and recessed in the floor, it is major surgery to get the entire bed out.
