I have heard three methods of preventing the subsequent cracking of floor tile in new construction. First, dropping the foundation one and one-half inches under all tile areas, then letting the tile installer come in and fill up to the finished floor level with his mud at the time of laying the tile. Second, not dropping the foundation, but putting 6" wire mesh in the slab under all tile areas. Third, doing neither of the previous steps, but merely laying down a layer of "simco" on top of the foundation and laying the tile on the "simco". Does anyone have any advice in this area or a website which might offer some research statistics on this matter?
