When the plastic is bound against studs, the expansion or contraction of the plastic tube rubs against the wood. When the plastic overcomes the friction, it clicks or pops as it is released. This often creates a ticking sound that starts when hot water is introduced and as the tube cools. The only way to stop the noise is to free the tube from rubbing.
