three way wiring

Posted by Liz on April 12th, 2003 01:52 PM

I am replacing a ceiling fixture that is controlled by 2 switches. Unfortunately the old fixture fell off before I could mark the wiring. I have three white, three black, a green, a copper and a red coming out of the ceiling. The three white are combined, the three black are combined, the green is obviously a ground. I'm assuming the copper is also a ground. What do I do with the red? I assumed it was also a ground and left it alone - the light worked when the power was back on - but not by the switches. I put the red with the blacks and got the same result. I put it with the whites and popped the curcuit. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
