They're wired such that they are always on

There is no light switch to turn them on and off. The only way to turn them off is to kill the main breaker for the house.

I thought they were wired like this as a safety precaution. If something on the same circuit with the smoke detector starts a fire and trips the breaker, then the detector could be turned off.

Should these be on a breaker?
