Some fillers go before the stain, others go after the stain but before the finish coat. Read the label carefully before using.

I, too, recommend using a spar urethane or spar varnish instead of a regular poly. The spars withstand alcohol better than regular poly as well as being tougher.

I prefer the heavy dark beers.
