Joe: Another way that I have done this is to remove the plaster/lath or drywall back to the closest studs; measure the thickness that you need to make up; for instance 7/8 in; Subtract off the thickness of whatever scrap drywall that you have handy; say i/2 in. The difference, 3/8 in., is the thickness of a piece of plywood that can be used as a backer, which you can solidly nail into the studs. Presto, you have a patch that is flush with the finished wall.
