I am in the middle of taking all the strips down and taping the joints. I just fill them level with the wallboard and tape. To make it even more fun, my walls have a little texture which means I have to mud the whole thing so it won't be textured with occasional smooth areas.
Every time a strip comes down there is less to distract your eye and it gets better and better. But... 1. prepare for it to be a long term project 2. go ahead all the way to the ceiling 3. just knock all those little brads into the wallboard and cover up the dents. 4. warn your significant other of your intention to start such a project (hehe) 5. I [horrors] like the plastic scrapers 6. drywall mud is cheap and you'll get veddy good at it in no time
