should be a solid pipe(not snap together) and of a heavy gauge. If you can find black stove pipe that is not snap together and heavy enough it would work....BUT the reason that they want you to use stainless is because you will not be able to see the pipe above the insert in the fireplace to tell when it needs to be replaced. With stainless you do not have to worry about this. Also make sure that you insulate between the stove flue pipe and fireplace flue.
