thanks - a follow up?

thanks for the cleaning advice - I had read that alkalis were tough on shellac, and since I make my own soap (with a naturally high pH) I was pretty sure it was out and a more gentle surfactant was in! Thanks for the confirmation.

I'll give the cleaning a good try first, then see how bad the shellac is...I'm reasonably sure that it needs refinishing, but I haven't been able to inspect it as closely as I'd like - my landlady is kinda paranoid after some of the stunts pulled by a previous tenant!

Once the cabinets are done, then I can attack the doors and baseboards (all done in the same wood!)
