Texturizing walls

I have just added a room to my house. I put up 1/2" wallboard on 2"x4" wood studs. I plan on paneling the bottom half of the walls. My wife wants me to texturize the top half. I have tried a texturizing material in paint with little success. This texture ws also small. My question is this: Should I place a thin skin of plaster on the entire wall, then go over it with a trowel? I have one wall in the house that appears to have been plastered, then some of the plaster was removed. Any tips on this would be grateful. Thank you
