Texturing walls

I have been interested in putting a faux stucco appearance on new walls
that I have installed in an area. I have seen a number of products at the
local hardware/Home Depot stores in the area which are specifically designed
for such use. But, I was talking with a person who does wall texturing for
a livelyhood, and they told me that they use the pre-mixed joint compound
and have been doing so for many years with no complaints from customers. So
what do you recommend? The joint compound that I have been using to finish
new drywall that I have installed seems to SOFT to hold up as a textured
