You could do as Steve suggested, or rent a texture hopper. There are 2 types simple hopper or hopper w/ compressor. If you have an air compressor get the hopper, if not rent the one that comes with a compressor.

Buy a couple boxes of joint compound, thin 1 box down to the consistancy of pancake batter, fill the hopper and spray a scrap to get the hang of it, adjust the spray tip, amount of water in the mix, air pressure, to get the orange peel effect you want. When you run out mix up the other box. This is the wall /ceiling effect on most new homes in the west. Wait 3-4 days and them prime and paint with an eggshell/satin paint...DO NOT use a semi gloss on the ceiling, as you will see every defect.
