Cover the exterior vent in a Garbage bag and secure with tape.......

Use a Garden hose to wet the roof around the vent..........Prepare the kitchen by removing the filter and possibly the fan......add a bright light/flashlight and a DripBucket....

"caulk" is never a good solution on the roof......
