I'll use up to 7 rounds of tape and sometimes add pipe dope on top of that. Put a heavy rag between the pipe and your wrench jaws to take out or put in. Use a rod in the other end instead of a wrench to help screw it but use one big enough (not a screwdriver) that won't knock that end out of round. Hand tight should do it. If it is snug in the place as you screw it up before it gets hand tight, then you should be ok by backing it off. If you can get it half way around or better hand tight, then I would try to wrench it on around without scratching or crushing it.
