be the answer. Corey, BC might be right, or the inside of your tank (especially on the bottom) may be caked with very hard scale. This makes gas water heaters very inefficient (heat can't penetrate the scale to heat the water).
I'm in South L.A.(Lake Charles) too. I now have gas & electric tankless heaters installed all over the south, with absolutely zero scaling problems.
