Tank water softener

A tank type water softener, (5 ft high 2ft dia) will not cause a drop in water pressure unless the valve on the input (cold) side or output (hot) side is not open all the way.

If your softener is very old (10-20 years) it is possible the the dip tube (goes from the cold water input down to near the bottom of the tank could get plugged from rust and hardness and other crud). In this case you need a new water heater.
