Swing-out Garage Doors

Posted by Grant on January 6th, 2000 07:29 PM

I have a workshop which is actually a second garage at the end of my driveway (The front garage is a drive-thru design.) I've had a swing-up one-piece door, 16 feet wide, 7 1/2 feet high.

I want to change that now. The new doors will swing out from the sides. This will allow me to open one at a time, which is ok, since I'm not driving cars in and out, and it will free up sdditional rafter space for storage.

The question is, what's the best material(s) to use for the doors? I'm thinking 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 angle steel frame with a cross-bar a little more than half way up, and a diagonal brace in the lower section. I'm going to put a couple windows in the upper third of each door.

Any thoughts? How about the best hinges? I have steel 2 x 4s as door posts. They'll take either bolts or welds.
