Support under 2nd floor ?

Posted by Boris on May 22nd, 2002 10:27 PM

I enjoy reading the posts here and thought i may get some input on a particular issue i am dealing with currently.

The project is a big ol' bungalow - 2 story with full basement. Built 1915. There was a fire and we are reframing. The engineer on the project suggested using 2 2x10's as support for the 2nd floor knee wall. The span is 18'6" and this side of the knee wall runs paralel with the ceiling/floor joists. CABO says that 2 2x10's are sufficient up to 20'3". I have suggested - rather insisted that the 2 2x10's for this side be upgraded to lvl 9 1/4" 2ply. The engineer doesnt seem to think that is necessary, but it doesnt sit right with me. I decided to do the lvl regardless since my name is on the job and the 2nd floor is a 3 bedroom 1 bath 1050 sf.

Am I being too cautious?
