Support beam for rear addition

Posted by Jay Donovan on March 22nd, 2003 04:54 PM

Hi,I am planning a 12' x 29' addition to the rear of my two story colonial. With the new space, I hope to create a large space 24' x 29' which will hold a kitchen/FR. I would like the space to be completely open. I have been told by architects that the 29' length of the addition needs to be supported by either a steel beam or if using wooden materials/beam, supported by columns at 8' increments in order to support the second floor. My question: are there other engineering solutions out there that can accomplish the same thing and keep the open space and if yes, what are they and are they more expensive that steel? thanks.
