we just recently moved into a 5-year-old house. the basement is structural and has a sump pit and sump pump...this is my first experience with a house with a sump. after moving in, we would occasionaly hear the sump pump running and we assumed all was well. this past weekend, we noticed the pump went on and ran all weekend long. the water level looks unchanged. the motor just keeps humming. what could be causing this? i have not tried removing the pump yet. could it be clogged? another note, the sump drains into the side yard and this weekend we have had bitter cold temps (below zero). i'm wondering if the drain is frozen and clogged and the pump can't get the water to drain? any advice on dealing with a running sump pump or with a sump and the cold would be greatly appreciated! thanks.
