Sump Pump

Posted by Joel on January 25th, 1999 06:13 PM

I have a 1-2 year old sump pump in my sump hole in the basement. The water in the summer (when I bought the house) was crystal clear.
Now there seems to be oil in the water. I was told this may be from the sump pump. When I click the floater to make it go on,
the water drains with no problem, but there is a hard spray from the bottom of the pump as though the water is not going into the drainpipe (yet the water goes away).
But then the water seems to drain back into the hole from the drainage pipe. What is the easist way to check to see if the pump is working correctly?
I've been told the oil is from the motor, but there is alot of oil. I live in Maryland, where there isn't oil in the ground, unfortunately.
