It sounds to me that the switch is bad. When the water empties the float activates a switch that turn the pump off. I would say replace the switch. I had just the opposite happen to me, I bought a new pump, just yesterday in fact, and it was turning off to soon, I called the manufacturer, they told me it was the switch, so I took it back for another one thats works perfect.
