What you need to do it remove the stump pattern around the area about 18" around the hole you made, get you a stiff putty knife are even a flat hoe will work good. It sounds like you have a crow foot pattern on your ceiling, you can buy these at a paint store for about $25.00. Touching up a small area can be ruff that why you should remove more so you have room to feather it out. After you aply the mud you will have to drag it are flaten it out some, you have to wait about ten min to let your mud patch dry before draging it. All you are doing is knocking off the tits as they are called from the stump block. Good Luck
