For nailing conventional base you normally need to hit the bottom plate in the wall within 1-1/2" of the subfloor. For taller profiles, you need a stud finder to locate studs for nailing higher on the piece. Panel adhesive can also keep the base in contact with the wall if there are minor waves in the drywall. A lot of joints are glued rather than nailed to avoid splitting and fill gaps.
