Conventional stucco is a craft that's been practiced for hundreds of years and requires many things, the least of which being a strong back.
Whether you are talking about conventional or synthetic stucco, a sound and watertight substrate is crucial. Masons of yesteryear used either felt paper or TYVEK, I prefer to use a sealer that is directly applied to the substrate.
