I'm a little uncertain what your trying to do and avoid here. I'd look into using a stripper such as a Methylene Chloride stripper used for stripping paints. There are non-toxic strippers like Peel-Away, but they are wet process strippers and tend to darken the wood. Using a stripper will take the finish completly off and you will end up needing to apply several coats of a floor finish like GymSeal or Fabulon.
