I've been able to remove the nasty tile and adhesive, sand and refinish the hardwood floor in one small room in my house by following advice on this page. I'm gearing up to tackle a larger area and I was hoping we all could learn from my mistakes.
The floor I did turned out pretty damn good with the exception of some slightly visible sort of "stripes" perpendicular to the grain of the wood. They are hard to describe but really look like zebra stripes in that as you follow a board it goes from light to dark; stipes are of equal size. They are not blatent, but they have been bothering my (admittedly overly critical) eye. I used a rented drum sander, with three grades of paper. I didn't go particulary deep, but I did get down to very light colored wood. These stripes were not visible before I sanded.
I was hoping someone had seen such a phenomonon before and could tell me how to prevent it next time.
