strip and refinish wood floors

We have ripped up the carpet in our "new" house. The house is approx. 100 years old. It has wood floors and we want to strip them and refinish them ourselves. The over all texture is in great shape. The finish is bad. What is the best stripper to use? Also, in the high traffic area's there is rather strange dark patches. Our guess is.... at one time someone put some kind of finish or oil or something down, trying to make the worn areas look better, but what ever it was has soaked into the wood and won't come up on the spots I've tested some stripper, any suggestions? We know they won't look perfect and some dark spots are fine, we like the charecter it adds.
