In reply to How many steps for my stair well... by Bob Vergith on November 30th, 2002 05:26 PM [Go to top of thread]

Hi Bob, here's what I come up with. The rise should be a flat 8 inches (12 rises in all), and the run should be around 9 inches (bringing you out to 111 inches). Now a disclaimer or two... I've built many a steps/stringers for decks and we typically don't have to worry about the run, so I may be off on that computation (others will surely correct me if so). Now, before tackling this be sure that the height is actually 8 feet (96 inches) from the top and where the steps will land. Measuring just from where the steps will start can really mess up measurements and cuts. Also, if you haven't cut stringers before it would be a really good idea to find a friend that has... after several years of doing it, I still second/third check myself everytime.

Hope this helps, and if you have more questions just let me know!
