I live in New England and I'm considering installing a stone patio off my addition and have the following questions.

1. The soil contains much clay and the area borders my house. How deep should I dig and what materials should I use as a base. (trap rock, or sand?)

2. When fitting the stones in place, would it be better to use stone dust or a mortar mix to set the stones? There is some ground heaving during the hard frost and in to the spring time.

3. What is the best kind of drainage to use in this design?
