There is so much that can be done now as Steve said including fixing your roof no matter what climate you are in this winter. Even Buffalo has roofs that can be fixed. You can also ruin your house from mold and mildew from the water to the point that the health department can condemn it. Only need moisture and warmth to start mold and mildew which doesn't take long.

Wet rotting lumber and walls can be very expensive to replace. Your insurance polices have a clause that you have to mitigate your damages or do what you can to prevent further damage. By not timely reporting and making temporary/permanent repairs, the insurance company could deny the claim for subsequent damage that wouldn't have happened if you dealt with it promptly.
