I just removed the carpet from the stairs in my home hoping to find wood that was acceptable for painting or staining. But, to my dismay, the wood looks like the builder made the stairs out of every scrap piece of wood he could find (the house was built in 1997). They have paint all over them where they were not covered when they sprayed the walls and ceiling with paint and also has large nicks in the wood. My biggest concern is the corners of the risers are all chipped off. Someone told me about some kind of oak veneer for stairs which I can glue/nail on and finish. Is this correct? Or does someone out there have any ideas?

Thank you
