Thanks for the reply. The TV show explained these were brand new stairs, counterbalanced to be easy for an elderly person to position. They also had a hand rail which cocked into position.
They cost around $700, but that would be cheaper than a hip replacement. They did require additional mounting space in the ceiling, but any large garage would be suitable. It had to do more with the footprint of the steps when lowered. I'll keep searching.
