Althought the proceedure isn't difficult, for a do-it-yourselfer it would be wise to get the advice of a carpenter.
With a floor to floor height of 8' (96"), you will likely have 13 risers @ 7.4", and 12 treads. The length of the treads should be in range from 10-10 1/2".
That number will depend on the amount of head clearance you will need to climb the stairs. If you use a 10" tread, your total run of stairs will be 10'. That will mean you'll need an opening of approximately 7-8' long.
Also, it would be wise to make the stairway around 3' wide.
As for 'beefing' up the structure, that's where an experienced carpenter would definately come in handy, just so you don't end up with your upstairs in your downstairs.....
