No such thing as a shortcut to quality. Things like "PolyShades" from Minwax, in my humble opinion, are difficult to use unless your well practiced with that type of material. Overlaps caused by a technique that is too slow or by high temps are darker, leaving you with an uneven color in the finish.

I use a lot of stains for interior work and I never leave the wood with just stain. I always apply at least 2 coats of a clear finish over it. It takes time, but I guarentee that it will out last wood with just stain on it by decades.
