staining and finishing

I just recently removed carpet from my stairs, leaving the outer region of the steps and the rails with a glossy "golden oak" color. Now the bare steps have a very light reddish brown color to them, which is the original wood, which I am sure has not been touched. I have sanded them and they are a very pale color but still have that color. I want them to have the same color as the outside region and the rails, and look the same way. Somebody mentioned just using varathol and re-applying until it comes to the same finish, but I am not sure. What do you do?
