I have restored an oak mantle with two 5 - 6' classic oak columns. I am attempting to expand the mantle to each side, and am looking into having two stain grade 8', 5 - 6" in diameter, oak columns made. So far, the cost is prohibitive for me. I am wondering if there is another way, or more specifically, a cheaper wood that I could use, to "fake" the look of oak - in terms of color, and possibly grain. Is there another way to achieve an oak column without using solid oak? Am I likely to find such columns through a salvage company?
