Squeaky Floors on 2nd Floor

Posted by John in TX on March 10th, 2002 11:27 AM

The second level floor in my eleven year old home squeaks and creaks badly in spots. I have no access to the underside of the flooring and the floor joists for shimming purposes. When I have the carpet and padding pulled up for replacement, what are the best things I can do to stop the squeaking? I was planning on drilling holes through the 4'X 8' pressed wood floor sheets into the joists and putting in screws with glue on the threads around the perimeter of the sheets in the problem areas. Is there anything more I should do? Anything special about the screws I should use? In the bathroom around the wood vanity cabinet, the creaking seems especially bad and might involve the cabinet too--any suggestions or insight?
