Tom, don't worry about the pic not turning out; you really did pretty good with your description.

These light guage sash guides are easily bent, so use care and patience in working with them; once they're bent, they almost never work well again.

If I've followed your description correctly, this is a type of system where the sash guides aren't fixed to the jambs, except for the screws which go through the springs. Those screws are TENSION ADJUSTMENT screws. Backing them out a little lets the springs grab the window sashes tighter.

Try backing them out first, and see if this helps; if the springs are still weak then you'll need to get replacement springs, which will not have to be a special kind designed for the window, just the same diameter and near the same length and strength.
